DAZN wants to terminate the contract for broadcasting matches of the French championship. RMC Sport reports that the streaming service fell behind on its monthly payment in February due to a dispute with the French Professional Football League (LFP).
The broadcaster withheld EUR35 million (which was later paid) due to the LFP not dedicating resources to combat piracy and some clubs not being willing to participate in content creation.
DAZN is concerned that it has only attracted 500, 000 subscribers in a country of 68 million people. The break-even rate is estimated to be 1. 5 million.
The league and its main broadcaster are negotiating with the support of a mediator, but there has been no significant progress.
Prior to the start of the season, the company revealed a plan that would give DAZN rights to more exclusive interviews with high-profile players and access to exclusive filming locations. However, the streamer believes that this action plan has not been sufficiently implemented and that some clubs are still denying them access.
The platform is considering the possibility of terminating the contract with Ligue 1 earlier than it can be done under the terms of the contract (in December 2025).
The league from soccer blog has floated the idea of tougher penalties or fines for clubs that fail to meet media obligations, but DAZN has not been convinced.
It is believed that there is a possibility of an amicable resolution to the matter, and DAZN may waive the clause prohibiting LFP from discussing future collaborations with rival broadcasters.
LFP is suspected of advertising the Ligue 1 season using bots. Their tweets say: This is going to be hell! DAZN with eight matches - wow! We can`t complain
